The Trojans women's golf team traveled down to University of South Florida this past weekend and claimed the 4th place in the Waterlefe Invitational. The women's team battled a par 72 with 6,059 yards.
The Trojans look forward to this tournament every year because they get to stay with host housing.
“We travel so much and stay in this hotel and that hotel. So it is nice to be able to spend time in someone else house verses a hotel. It just adds a little personal touch,” says senior Haley Lawrence.
On Monday the girls played 36 holes and were able to ride in carts. They finished the first round with a score totaling to a 320, then they ended the day with the second round score of 321 as a team.
Freshman, Taylor McGraw posted a 77 for the first round of play and senior, Haley Lawrence posted a 76 for her second round.
After the two rounds on Monday, the Lady Trojans were in 7th place out of 9 teams.
“Monday was a terrible day for us a team, but we did have two good rounds, which we used,” says Coach Terry. “Overall, the girls were not happy with how they played on Monday.”
For the final round the lady Trojans posted the second lowest score of the day, a 299.
Coach Terry comments, “Tuesday morning was new day and the girls knew it. We went out and took advantage of the new day before us.”
The Trojans choose not use the golf carts during the third round of play.
“The weather had been bad a few days before we played, so the carts had to be kept on cart path only. As a team, we stay in a better rhythm walking and carrying our bags,” Comment Lawrence after the third round. “I believe the first two rounds we were out of pace.”
The Trojans played as a different team on the second day for the final round.
“The girls play a lot better the third round. The third round looked more like the team we won with in Fred Marx Tournament in Monroe, LA,” says Coach Terry. “We have one more tournament left this fall and I told the girls make sure they pack the right team.”
The Trojans slid into a three way tie with South Alabama, and Florida Gulf Coast University to finish the tournament in 4th place.
The success of the Trojans is looking up and they are continuing to get better with every round they play.
Overall breakdown for the tournament for the individual players:
Haley Lawrence finished tied for 7th firing an 81, 76, 73. She shot 14 over par for all three rounds.
