TROY, Ala. – The Troy University women's basketball team will look to expound on their successes they had Wednesday night against South Alabama, as they travel west for a Sun Belt Conference encounter with the Warhawks of ULM on Saturday afternoon.
Troy (5-16, 2-6 Sun Belt) enjoyed success, both on the offensive end and the defensive end of the floor, Wednesday night. The Trojans held South Alabama to just 11 points in the first half – a new school record for fewest points allowed – as well as holding them to their lowest point total of the year, their worst loss of the year and the lowest field goal percentage this year.
However, that is in the past, and the present brings forth ULM (11-10, 5-3 Sun Belt) who have three consecutive conference games.
The Warhawks are led by a trio of players hovering around the 10 points per game average this season. Kassie Courtney leads the way at 10.8 points per game, while Larrie Williams averages 10.7 points per game. Preseason All-Sun Belt pick, Sannisha Williams, averages 10 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds per game.
“They are a lot like us,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. “We have to just forget about Wednesday night and concentrate on the task in front of us. ULM is the next game on the schedule; therefore it is what we will worry about. When you go there, it is a tough place to play in.”
The Trojans are led by junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) at 14 points per game, while she is shooting 39.3 (24-for-61) percent from beyond the arc. Senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) scored her 1,000th career point Wednesday night and needs just two rebounds to become the second player at the school to score 1,000 points and grab 700 rebounds since the school went to Division I in 1993. She is currently averaging 13.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season.
Troy will play without sophomore Jamesha Blake (Atlanta, Ga./SW DeKalb HS) on Saturday afternoon, as she is home attending the funeral of her great grandmother. She will rejoin the team for next week's game against FIU.
The game tips at 4 pm from Fant-Ewing Coliseum, and can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM beginning with the pregame show at 3:45 pm.
