BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Troy University women's basketball team looks to break a four-game losing streak Saturday afternoon when they take on Western Kentucky University at E.A. Diddle Arena.
Troy (4-15, 1-5 Sun Belt) is in search of their first true road win of the year as they travel to Bowling Green, a place where they have never won. The Trojans do have one win to their credit away from home this season, a victory over Mississippi Valley State University on a neutral court in Atlanta.
The Trojans come into the game on the heels of a 103-52 loss to Middle Tennessee on Wednesday night, a night in which the Blue Raiders registered five players in double figures. It was the first time since February of last season that a team scored 100 points against the Trojans, a feat which has never happened in back-to-back games.
Troy is led by junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) in scoring at 13.7 points per game on the season. She entered the week ranked seventh in the conference in scoring and 197th in the country in that category. She is also one of the league leaders in three-point field percentage, knocking down 37.5 percent of her shots from beyond the arc – good for eighth in the conference.
Meanwhile, senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) continues to inch closer to the 1,000 point-700 rebound club, as she stands at 960 points and 687 rebounds. She is second on the team in scoring (12.9 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (8.9 rpg). She entered the week 55th in the nation in rebounding and 20th in double-doubles on the season (eight).
Sophomore point Sophie Kleeman (Newcastle, Australia/Newcastle HS) and sophomore guard Jamesha Blake (Atlanta, Ga./SW DeKalb HS) also find themselves among the league leaders in different categories this week. Kleeman is 11th in assists per game (195th in the nation), 15th in three-point field goal shooting (.279), second in minutes played (38.4 mpg) and 11th in assist/turnover ratio (250th in the nation), while Blake is 19th overall in rebounding in the conference (5.5 rpg) and 12th defensive rebounds (4.5 rpg).
WKU (7-11, 4-2 Sun Belt) is led by LaTeira Owens at 11.1 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game, while senior Arnika Brown is averaging 10.8 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Brown recorded a double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds, as the Lady Toppers are just one of two teams this season to record 20 or more offensive rebounds in a game against Troy.
The game tips at 3 p.m., and can be seen on HSSN and Fox Sports Channel. Check your local cable provider for channel listings in your area. The game can also be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM, beginning with the pregame show at 2:45 pm courtside.
