There is no quarterback controversy for Troy. There is, however, a question at the position.
Jamie Hampton and Corey Robinson both proved in the off-season that each can effectively run the Trojans offense, which posed a good problem to have.
Both players are expected to see playing time Saturday evening when the Trojans open the 2010 season at Veterans Memorial Stadium against the Falcons of Bowling Green. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
“I'm really excited with whoever gets to play,” Hampton said. “Whether it's me or Corey, We don't care. As long as the team is doing good, that's all we are concerned with. If Corey goes out and starts and does well, I'm excited. It doesn't matter to us; it's just about winning the game.”
Robinson's thoughts on the situation were almost identical to Hampton's.
“It is a good situation,” Roibinson said. “If one of us plays bad and the other plays well, it can only help this football team. We have been splitting time at practice every day, so that has prepared us for what it will be like in the game. I think it will be a little different, but it will be ok.”
The question of who would start has been a hot topic all summer. Senior wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan put the debate to rest when he told members of the media on Monday that he would be starting.
Both quarterbacks feel relieved to have an asset like Jernigan with them on the field, and he will help either quarterback perform better.
“Jerrel has been around the program for four years now, and he knows the offense inside and out,” Hampton said. “He probably knows the offense better than anyone else on the field. It's great to have guy like him and our entire group of receivers to help carry the load.”
Robinson had high praise for Jernigan as well, and even offered up another scenario.
“If Jerrel wants to play quarterback the whole game, as long as we win, that is ok with me,” Robinson said.
The quarterback blessing is limited to just the two, but Jernigan in a wildcat package is something Trojan fans could expect to see on a regular occasion.
“We both said before camp started that no matter who the starter is, we are going to hit it together because we know that if we both hit it hard at the same time we know we can both win games,” Robinson said.
That is the common thread throughout the team. Every player at every position for the Trojans battled for their position on the field, and the goal at each spot is the same. Beat Bowling Green.
