MONROE, La. – The Troy women's golf team erased all doubt in the final round of the ULM/Fred Marx Invitational on Tuesday, posting the low round of the tournament to take the event by six shots over South Alabama.
It is the first tournament victory for the Troy women's team since the fall of 2001.
Freshman Signy Arnorsdottir brought home top individual player honors as the Trojans had players finish first, third and fourth overall in the event at Bayou DeSiard Country Club.
Trojans coach Matt Terry said his team showed a killer instinct down the stretch on Tuesday.
“We really didn't play all that well until the last five holes,” Terry said. “At that point Sam Houston State starting hitting the ball in the water and we started making birdies. Once we got hot, the girls never took their foot off the accelerator.”
The Trojans posted a final round score of 303 to finish the event with a 926, six shots better than second place South Alabama. Troy posted the lowest team score in two of the three rounds of the tournament.
“This is my first win with as the women's coach and it has been a long time in coming,” Terry said. “The girls played solid all day today and if was fun to watch. We made some mistakes early, but they put the throttle down when the time came.”
Troy's last women's title in golf came at the Coca-Cola Intercollegiate in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Oct. 27-28, 2001. The Trojans also had an individual player win that event, Tracy Tidwell.
Arnorsdottir, a native of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, who was playing in her first collegiate tournament, coasted to the individual title with a final round score of 75. Her three-round total of 219 was seven shots better than runner-up Shelby Hardy of Sam Houston State.
“I didn't play all that well today, but I decided to play very conservatively because I had a big lead,” Arnorsdottir said. “I knew going in that there was no way I was going to lose a six shot lead. It feels great to get this first tournament.”
Junior Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.), who was the last Troy player to take individual honors in a tournament when she finished first at the Troy Invitational last fall, finished third in this event. She tied for the low round of the day on Tuesday with a one-under par 71 to finish the tournament at 11-over par 227.
Sophomore Sofia Bjorkman (Vanersborg, Sweden) finished fourth with a 14-over par score of 230. She closed the tournament with a four-over round of 75.
Senior Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) closed out the tournament with a final round score of 84 to finish tied for 50th. Sophomore Sara Fennvik (Gothenburg, Sweden) posted an 83 in the final round to finish tied for 54th. Senior Annelies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand) closed with an 82 to finish tied for 60th.
The Trojans will return to action next Monday when they open play at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational, hosted by South Florida at the Waterlefe Golf and River Club in Bradenton, Fla.
