ULM/FRED MARX INVITATIONAL SCORES
MONROE, La. – The Troy University women's golf team enters play on Tuesday in the final round of the ULM/Fred Marx Invitational within three shots of the lead.
The Trojans held a four-shot lead after the first round of play on Monday, but had two players struggle in the second round, dropping the team into second place, three shots behind Sam Houston State.
“We had triples, quads, everything, and we are still in the hunt,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “We had three people who played well. We just have to have one more. We are only three shots out, so we still have a chance.”
Three Trojans enter the final round of play in the top 10 individually, including freshman Signy Arnorsdottir, who owns a six stroke lead on the field after completing the first day of play at even par 144.
A native of Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, Arnorsdottir got her collegiate career off to a flying start by posting an eagle on her first collegiate hole.
“I just hit my drive straight onto the fairway, hit a good second shot onto the green and putted in for eagle,” Arnorsdottir said. “I thought the entire day went pretty good, so I am happy.”
Arnorsdottir finished the opening round with a one-under par score of 71. She began to struggle a little in the second round, but got hot down the stretch to finish with a one-over 73.
“She had a couple of bad holes but I told her that she was still leading the tournament and that got her fired up again,” Terry said. “She made a couple of birdies and some pars down the stretch.”
Arnorsdottir enters play on Tuesday with a six-shot lead over second pace Ana Garcia of South Alabama (77-73=150).
The Trojans have two others in the top 10 of the tournament. Sophomore Sofia Bjorkman (Vanersborg, Sweden) is tied for seventh after posting a score of 11-over par (79-76=155) for the first day. Junior Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) is tied for 10th, one shot back of Bjorkman (79-77=156).
Troy's two seniors both struggled during the opening day of play. Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) is 51st after the first day of play (80-88=168) and Annelies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand) is tied for 66th (89-89=178).
“I told the two seniors that we have to have them to win this tournament,” Terry said. “I know they don't feel good after the way they played today, but they have to shake it off and come back and play well tomorrow.”
Arnorsdottir has confidence that her teammates will bounce back in the final round.
“I go into every tournament to win, and we are going to win this,” Arnorsdottir said. “The girls can do much better than they did today.”
The final round of play at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club started at 8:30 on Tuesday morning.
