KENNESAW, Ga. - The Troy University volleyball team ended a three-match losing streak, defeating Coastal Carolina in the first match of the Owl Invitational 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-19).
"We played very well today." Coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said "It was a true team effort, and it looks like we are getting comfortable out there with our new line-up. We are looking forward to continuing play tomorrow."
Troy (5-8) was led in the Friday afternoon match by junior Natasha Kolunija with recorded 11 kills and a .385 attack percentage, while sophomores Kayla Giles and Devin Von Pingel added seven kills each for the Trojans.
In the first set, Troy took an early lead with service aces from Giles and senior Megan Henderson, to go along with kills from Von Pingel and Kolunija. The Chanticleers battled back to within four of the Trojans at 8-4, before sophomore Caroline Alexander put a stop to the rally when she recorded a career-high three consecutive service aces. Kills by Henderson, Von Pingel and junior Brittany McClelland insured the Trojan victory.
The second set began close and was tied three times before a kill from McClelland pulled Troy away. Coastal Carolina (5-6) was able to stay within a point of the Trojans until a kill from Kolunija, and a service ace from Henderson put Troy up 13-7. The Chanicleers were unable to catch up and the Trojans went into intermission up 2-0.
The third set began much like the other two, Troy took the lead with kills from Kolunija and a service ace from Henderson. The break gave Coastal Carolina some unwanted energy and they were able to form a rally and came within one of Troy at 14-13, but kills from Giles and Kolunija and a service ace from Alexandra Alexander put the Trojans on top 18-15. Troy eventually soared to victory in this set and took the match from Coastal Carolina.
Troy will play again Saturday at 12 noon EST when they face host Kennesaw State, and again at 5 pm when they play Presbyterian University. Live stats are available at the link above.
