Box Score
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Troy took Chattanooga to four sets Saturday morning in the Best Western Invitational, at the University of North Florida, before falling 3-1 (12-25, 25-21, 26-28, 23-25).
The Trojans (4-7) were led on the morning by sophomore Devin Von Pingel with 12 kills and a .243 attack percentage, while junior Brittany McClelland added 10 kills.
Chattanooga (3-7) took an early lead in the first set and the Trojans were not able to keep up. Rally efforts with kills from senior Megan Henderson and Von Pingel edged Troy a little closer, but the Trojans fell short as UT-Chattanooga jumped ahead 1-0. Troy was the team to take the early lead in the second set with a pair of kills from sophomore Kayla Giles. The Lady Mocs tried to make a comeback, but could never take a lead. Kills from McClelland and Giles insured the Trojans a victory as they went into intermission tied at 1-all.
Troy took an early lead in the third set as well with kills from Von Pingel and junior Natasha Kolunija and a service ace from Giles. This time, Chattanooga was able to battle back and tie Troy at 13-all, from there it was a points battle until 25-all when the Lady Mocs were able to grab a 27-26 lead and put the set away.
The fourth set once again saw the Trojans take an early lead, with kills from Von Pingel, McClelland, and Kolunija. Chattanooga was able to come back and tie Troy at 12-all, and the two teams traded points from that point. The set was tied three more times before the Lady Mocs took a lead, but the Trojans weren't done yet. A pair of kills by Von Pingel and a kill by Koulnija brought Troy to within two, but the rally was cut short when Chattanooga took the set and the match.
Troy will play their last game of the Best Western Invitational today at 3 p.m. when they take on the Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Follow all the Troy action on Twitter by following @TroyAthletics.
