TROY, Ala. – The Troy University volleyball team looks to bounce back from a tough weekend at the War Eagle Invitational, traveling to in-state rival Samford University on Wednesday in non-conference action.
Troy (1-2) faces the Bulldogs for the 30th time in school history, and leads Samford 20-9 in the all-time series. Last season, the two teams met in Sartain Hall with the Trojans coming away with a 3-0 victory late in the year.
"Samford is a really nice in-state rival," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "They have a really good program and a really good coaching staff. We think out teams match up well, and we have split matches over the last couple of years. It will be fun to see how we stack up with them this week."

The last time the two teams met in Birmingham, Samford came away with a 3-1 victory in 2008; and the Bulldogs also won 3-0 in 2007.
The Trojans opened the season at the War Eagle Invitational this past weekend, falling to Auburn and Georgia Southern; while defeating UT-Martin in the tournament finale. Sophomore Devin Von Pingel was named All-Tournament for her efforts as she recorded 29 total kills throughout the tournament. She recorded 12 kills against Georgia Southern while hitting .529, and connected for 11 kills against UT-Martin on Saturday night.
"The tournament prepares us for the rest of the year because we ran into different style of play," Kirkpatrick said. "Auburn was a fast team, Georgia Southern was about like us and UT-Martin played a little bit slower than we did. It prepares for us different speeds and everyone in our conference plays at a different speed."

This will be the fourth consecutive road match for Troy to open the season, before they return home to host the 2010 Troy University Spiketacular at Sartain Hall. The tournament will feature the likes of Evansville, McNeese State and Western Illinois; with action starting at 10 am on Saturday morning.
