War Eagle Invitational Ends With Victory for Trojans

Troy picks up first win of the season over UT-Martin go close the tournament in Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. - The Troy University volleyball team completed the War Eagle Invitational, hosted by Auburn University, with a victory over the UT-Martin Skyhawks 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-14).

The Trojans (1-2) were led in the match by sophomore Devin Von Pingel who had 11 kills with a .529 attack percentage and two solo blocks. Sophomore Caroline Alexander posted 18 assists and two digs for the Trojans. Sophomore Lizzie Clough also had an exceptional match with five kills and 10 digs on the night.

In the first set, the Trojans jumped to an early 7-0 lead with kills by Von Pingel, assisted by senior Megan Henderson, and a service ace by Clough. UT-Martin (0-3) battled back to within six points, but it wasn't enough to match the Trojans. A kill by Natasha Kolunija off an assist by Henderson propelled the Trojans forward and UT-Martin never regained strength.

In the second set, the two teams battled throughout as they traded points for the majority of the set and were tied 10 times. The turning point came with the set knotted at 23-all. Sophomore Kayla Giles recorded two service aces to push the Trojans to a victory going into the intermission.

The Trojans came out of the break rejuvenated, as they jumped to an early 4-0 lead with kills from Von Pingel and Alexander. The Skyhawks came back to shorten the deficit to four at 14-10, but another kill by Von Pingel, and a service ace from junior Brittany McClelland, put the Trojans on the right track again. Despite Skyhawks efforts, they weren't able to start another rally against the Trojans.

The Trojans next match will be Wednesday night at 7pm when they take on the Samford University Bulldogs in Birmingham.
