TROY, Ala. - The 2009 Troy Invitational went off without a hitch for everyone involved until the five o'clock hour. Several matches were in process when Mother Nature did not cooperate and dumped heavy rains on the Troy-area causing the suspension of play.
Those matches that did not get complete on Friday afternoon will be first on the Lunsford Tennis Complex courts Saturday morning, beginning at 8 am.
However, several matches were complete, and several Trojans made their way through the draws and into the next rounds.
The biggest upset of the day occurred in the 'B' Draw of the women's draw when Troy's Lauren Simpson took to the court for the first time for the university. She upended Natalie Seinkob 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. She then advances to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory and is staring down her teammate and fellow freshman, Kelly Irving in the other half of the draw. Irving worked her way into the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the second round and a walkover in the quarterfinals to reach her first semifinal as a Trojan. The two must now await their semifinal opponent, but are looking to play each other in the finals after knocking the top two seeds in their draw.
In the 'C' Draw Gabriella Veiga won her first round match-up 6-2, 6-2; while teammate Emma Smith advanced to the second round with a walkover against the second-seeded player from South Alabama.
Leonie Guijt of Troy won her first round match (6-4, 6-1) in the 'A' Draw to set up a second round match-up with conference foe Claire Clark of ULM. Clark, the 102nd-ranked player in the nation defeated Guijt in a hard-fought three-set match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. Freshman Karoline Grymel advanced to te second round with a resounding 6-2, 6-2 victory and is the same draw as Clark. If Grymel can win her second round match, she will meet Clark in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
On the men's side, Aurelien Tave had to play a first round match in the 'A' Draw. He was able to work his way into the second round after a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Gokalp Ozdemir of Kennesaw State. In the second round, Tave - Troy's number one player throughout the second half of last season - will face a top-seeded player from NAIA power AUM.
Meanwhile, Xavier Masson was leading his first-round match (second round) 6-4, 3-1 when the rains came; meaning he will have to come back with a one-set lead tomorrow morning at 8 am.
In the 'B' Draw, Troy's Bastain Maucher picked up a first-round victory over Kennesaw State's Ryan Bouttell 6-3, 6-1 to move into the second round where he will face a top-seeded player from AUM. Guilherme Sahadi also picked up a first round win for the Trojans in the 'B' Draw with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Meanwhile, in doubles action two women's teams and one men's team made it through the opening round and will prepare for the next round on Saturday morning.
