TROY, Ala. - The second day of the 2009 Troy Invitational ended much like the first, with rain in the Troy area halting play with some matches complete and forcing others to be suspended until Sunday morning.
The tournament was scheduled to conclude early tomorrow with the finals, but now will have to conclude the semifinals before the championships can be decided in all of the flights.
For the Trojans, several players were in action from suspended matches on Friday with some advancing deeper into their draws. In the Men's 'A' Draw, Xavier Masson went into Saturday morning leading his match 6-4, 3-1; but after sitting for nearly 12 hours, Masson fell in his match to one of AUM's top players 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
In the Men's 'B' Draw, Bastain Maucher and Guilherme Sahadi both advanced to the semifinals to face each other for the right to advance to the championship round. Maucher pulled the upset in the quarterfinals, before defeating Sahadi 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the championship match.
On the women's side, Karoline Grymel finds herself trailing in the first set to one of AUM's top players in the quarterfinals. She is down 5-0 (15-0) in the first set of that match, as she is the only Trojan still alive in the Women's 'A' Draw.
In the Women's 'B' Draw, the Trojans are now assured of having at least one player in the finals as they have three of the semifinal spots occupied. Lauren Simpson and Kelly Irving each advanced to the semifinals on Friday, while Rosaura Ramirez-Vega advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory. She will face Simpson in the top half of the draw, while the bottom half of the draw will not be decided until Sunday morning; however, it will involve a Trojan player.
In the Women's 'C' Draw, Gabriella Veiga advanced to the semifinals after leading going into the suspension on Friday afternoon. LEading 7-5, 3-2 (30-30) heading into the suspension, Veiga prevailed in the match 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals which she will play tomorrow morning.
The Trojans qualified a doubles team in the semifinals in the Men's 'A' Draw as Masson and Branko Weber claimed an 8-4 victory in the quarterfinals; and now must face the second-seeded team from AUM. On the women's side, the Trojans have two teams in the semifinals in the 'A' Draw. In the top half of the bracket, the team of Stephanie Vieira and Ramirez-Vega advanced with an 8-4 victory; while in the bottom half of the draw, the team of Grymel and Leonie Guijt advanced to the semifinals with a walkover. In the Women's 'B' Draw, the team of Emma Smith and Veiga advanced to the semifinals with an 8-1 victory in the quarterfinals and are now matched up with the top-seeded team from AUM. In the bottom half of the draw, the team of Irving and Simpson advanced to the semifinals with a walkover.
The tournament will resume at 8 am Sunday morning, weather permitting and will conclude Sunday afternoon with the champions being crowned.Skylar Meade, Blake Cavill & Zach Crotchfelt SBC Tournament Postgame - South Alabama
