The Troy Volleyball team announced new additions for the 2010 season on Tuesday. Four student-athletes will join the Trojans on the court this fall, and head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick is anticipating great things from them and the returners.
"With the addition of these four young ladies, I feel that we've really addressed some of our key areas of need from last season," Kirkpatrick said. "By bringing in Natasa (Kolunija), Lindsey (Schoewe) and Alexandra (Alexander), we get bigger on our front line, and it also allows us to spread our offense around more. Courtney (Cohen) could be one of the best ball control players that I've ever had. She's very solid in serve receive and is an outstanding defender. Our defense will improve dramatically with these new players, and I think that we have a chance to be better offensively than in the past few years."
Cohen is coming to Troy from Etowah High School in Etowah, Georgia. The 5'6" libero recorded 200 kills with a .538 attack average in her senior season along with 67 aces and 170 digs. She was an All-State Honorable Mention, Senior All-Star, First Team All-Area, First Team All-County and the Cherokee County Player of the Year.
Schoewe is a 6'2" outside hitter from Niceville High School in Niceville, Florida. She helped lead the Eagles to a 28-1 record this year en route to a berth in the Florida Class 5A Regional Finals. In 183 hitting attempts she posted 117 kills with a hitting percentage of 51 percent. She posted 40 blocks and assisted on 33 others. These numbers earned her a spot on the Pensacola Sport Association All-Star Team as well as MVP of the tournament.
Alexander stands 5'11" and is coming to Troy from McNeil High School in Austin, Texas. She was named to the Texas District 16-5A First Team after posting solid numbers as an outside hitter. She was also named as an Honorable Mention for the TSWA All-State Team. She is a member of the Austin Juniors 18 Cedar Park Volleyball Club. In her senior season at McNeil she posted 58 aces, 75 assists, 83 total blocks and 628 total digs. She posted 388 total kills with a .242 attack percentage.
Kolunija will join the Trojans as a transfer from Louisiana Tech. She posted 2.32 kills per set for the Bulldogs. Last season she posted 79 kills, 18 digs and 13 total blocks in the 14 appearances she made for Louisiana Tech.
