BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Troy Trojans softball team couldn't avoid a sweep as they fell to WKU 2-0 in the final game of their road Sun Belt series on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (19-19, 7-6) had seven hits, by seven different players, in the game but stranded nine runners as WKU won with just four hits on the day.
Ashlyn Williams (15-14) was tagged with the loss for the Trojans despite giving up just the four hits and one earned run with nine strikeouts.
The Trojans would chase WKU starter Dana Nathanson early. Three Troy singles would load the bases with one out in the second inning, bringing WKU ace Kim Wagner to circle. Next up for the Trojans was Sarah Shields who lined a shot right at WKU's shortstop, allowing the Lady Toppers to double up Kortney Cooper at third base to end the threat.
The Trojans would have other chances as they would leave seven baserunners on in the first six innings, but Wagner spread around the Trojans seven hits and Troy couldn't score.
Williams was equally impressive though, as she gave up just one hit through the first five innings. However she ran into her first real threat in the sixth inning.
After a quick first out, the next two Lady Toppers (21-13, 5-7) hit singles to place themselves on first and second. A double steal moved both into scoring position. After a infield fly retired the second Lady Topper of the inning, a single plated the first run of the game and a throwing error on the play plated the second, giving WKU a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans would threaten in the seventh as an error and a walk allowed Kala Moore and Katie Ely to reach base, but the Trojans stranded their eighth and ninth runners of the game and couldn't score.
Wagner (13-5) got the win for WKU throwing 5.2 innings and giving up three hits.
The Trojans will be back on the diamond next weekend when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for a three games series with Florida Atlantic.
