AUBURN, Ala. - The Troy Trojans took a break from Sun Belt play on Wednesday night as they travel to Auburn to take on the Tigers. Auburn took the game by a score of 3-1.
Ashlyn Williams (15-12) started for the Trojans and took the loss, going 5.0 innings and giving up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts to add to her NCAA leading total of 257.
The Trojans (19-16) only managed two hits off of Auburn starter Anna Thompson (10-5) who went the distance for the Tigers and picked up the win.
The Tigers got on the board first with a single score in the third inning. Auburn led off the inning with a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout moved the runner to third with two outs, and single past a diving Rocky Paige at first and Sarah Shields at second scored the first run of the game for Auburn.
Auburn would add two more in the fifth. The first Tiger got on base on a ball that third baseman Nikki Hollett made a great play on, but no one for the Trojans was at the bag at first. After a strikeout and a hit batter put runners on first and second with two outs, back-to-back singles plated both runners.
The Trojans would erase the shutout in the seventh inning. Hayden Gann led the inning off with a solo shot over the 15-foot wall in right field at Jane B. Moore Field. That dinger was the fifth of the year for Gann, the highest total on the season.
The Trojans will return to Sun Belt action this weekend when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. Troy will take on WKU in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and a single game on Saturday at 12:00 noon.
