Trojans Finish Fourth at USA Invitational

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University women's golf team battled through difficult weather conditions at the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational to finish in a tie for fourth place.
The Trojans were just two shots behind first round leader FIU on Monday when play entered the second round. Rain, wind and darkness forced the teams off the Azalea City Club course before the end of the second round, which was completed Tuesday morning prior to the start of the final round of play.
“The weather got nastier as we went along,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “Temperatures dropped into the 30s with 10 to 15 miles per hour winds. We played bad in the first part of the second round and had some rough patches today.”
Troy finished the second round with a 317 to fall 10 shots behind eventual team winner Memphis. The Tigers followed an opening round score of 309 with a second round 300, which was the best of the tournament. The Tigers closed with a 304 in the final round to win by six shots over FIU.
The Trojans finished with a final round score of 319 to finish with an overall 938, tied with Samford for fourth place. FIU (919) finished second with Stetson (921) third.
“We did some good things that we can build on,” Terry said. “The really good thing is that we are right back on the road Friday.”
Marissa Steen (75-73-74) of Memphis and Lauren Cate (73-75-74) of Stetson tied for the individual title with a six-over par score of 222. Steen took top honors, winning in a playoff.
The Trojans were led by freshman Sofia Bjorkman (77-78-77) who finished in 12th place with a score of 232. It was Bjorkman who also had the highlight shot of the tournament for Troy, holing out from 200 yards on the par 4 16th hole for an eagle.
Senior Desirae Zine (76-79-78) finished one shot behind Bjorkman in a tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Nikki Crowley finished tied for 27th, followed by junior Kaley Branton (tied for 34th) and sophomore Haley Lawrence (tied for 43rd). Junior Liz Balkcom, who was playing as an individual in the tournament, matched Lawrence and tied for 34th.
“They all played solid in stretches and we had some good rounds,” Terry said. “We had some good and bad but, hopefully, we can tie it all together next week.”
The Trojans will be back in action this weekend when they travel to play in the Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in Augusta, Ga.
