From Bourbon Street to the Louisiana Superdome, the time has come for the Troy Trojan Nation to call New Orleans home for the 2010 bowl season.
The Trojans formally accepted a bid to the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Sunday to face the Ohio Bobcats as reward for their fifth consecutive Sun Belt Conference championship.
The Trojans and Bobcats will do battle before a national audience on December 18th on ESPN at 8 p.m.
Troy University Athletics Director Steve Dennis knows the elements needed for a championship season. Great coaching and great players come to mind, but behind that he knows that support is one of the supreme elements needed for anything to succeed.
“I want everyone to know how important it is for the 12th man to show up for Troy University here in a couple of weeks,” Dennis said. “The football team and the coaching staff have done what they needed to do. We're very proud of the young men that are on this team and the coaches on this staff.”
The appearance in the New Orleans Bowl is Troy's third in the past five seasons. The bowl bid is awarded to the conference champion each season, and Dennis said the run the Trojans are on now is historic.
“Trying to win five conference championships in a row is just unbelievable,” Dennis said. “It's a great testament to the kids and the coaches. It puts you in an elite group. The only other schools that have ever done that are Alabama, Ohio State, Southern California, BYU, Florida State and now Troy. That's a huge accomplishment to get to the top, but even more so to stay at the top given the turnover of players and given coaches that have moved from here to there.”
Trojan fans are encouraged to attend the game in full force. Tickets are now on-sale through the athletic ticket office. Fans who can't attend the game still have an opportunity to help the cause for the 12th man too.
“The biggest thing now is that I want to challenge the 12th man to buy their tickets from our ticket office and go to the game.,” Dennis said. “If you can't go, you can still buy a ticket to help our band go or the underprivileged in New Orleans to go as well.”
Tickets for the 10th R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl are $40 each are available through the Troy Athletics Ticket Office or online at TroyTrojans.com. Troy University students can purchase one half-price ticket by presenting a valid student ID at either the ticket office or in the student center all this week.
