Bad Holes Haunting Trojans

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Troy University women's golf team is playing in its final event of the fall this week at the 33rd Annual FIU Pat Bradley Invitational, and the Trojans have found the going tough through the first two rounds of play.
The event is being played at the Pelican Preserve & Country Club on the Egret and Heron Courses. The two nine-hole layouts combine to form a 6,241-yard layout with a par of 72.
Through the first two round of play on Sunday and Monday, the Trojans stand 12th in the 15-team event with Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas holding the second round lead.
Troy coach Matt Terry said the Trojans problem in the first two rounds is simple.
“We are just making too many big numbers,” Terry said. “A good score is there for the taking, but we simply have too many doubles, triples and quads to be able to post a good score.”
Sophomore Haley Lawrence is the only Troy player who has avoided the big numbers on her scorecard. The Prattville native posted a one-over par score of 73 in Monday's second round, a trip that included one birdie and two bogeys. Lawrence opened on Sunday with a five-over score of 77 that featured 13 pars and five bogeys.
She is tied for 18th place in the tournament entering Tuesday's final round.
“I felt like I played really well today,” Lawrence said. “I putted well and made a lot of up and downs. It was a good round today. We have to eliminate some of the triples and doubles. That is something we can focus on tomorrow.”
A pair of players from Daytona State College lead the tournament individually. Mitsuki Katahira owns a four-shot lead over teammate Ericka Schneider after consecutive rounds of three-under par 69. Daytona State is one shot behind North Texas for the team lead with Western Michigan and Maryland within striking distance.
Final round action will start at 7:30 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday. Live scoring from the tournament is available on Golfstat.com.
