Trojans prepare to face WKU Saturday afternoon

TROY, Ala. - The Troy University Trojans volleyball fell to conference foe Middle Tennessee State University 3-0 (15-25, 14-25, 16-25) Friday night at Sartain Hall in Sun Belt play.

"We found out tonight why Middle Tennessee is a Top 40 team in receiving votes," head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said "We challenged the team and we just need to keep getting better in those plays of the game."

The Trojans (10-12, 2-3 Sun Belt) were led on the night by sophomore Devin Von Pingel with seven kills and a .235 attack percentage. Freshmen Alexandra Alexander also contributed for the Trojans with three kills and 10 digs on the night.

The first set was tied five times before Middle was finally able to pull away from Troy. The lead slowly faded as kills from Von Pingel and senior Victoria Rogochewsky tied the set once more at 9-all. Three kills from junior Brittany McClelland kept the Trojans in the set, but Troy eventually fell to the Blue Raiders (16-4, 50 Sun Belt) in the opening set.

In the second set, the Blue Raiders took a 10-1 lead over the Trojans, but kills from McClelland and Rogochewsky brought the Trojans to within 10 of the Blue Raiders. However, Middle Tennessee was able to pull back ahead, although kills by Von Pingel and senior Megan Henderson kept Troy within reach until the Blue Raiders took the set.

In the third set, the Blue Raiders once again take the lead from Troy. Down 8-2, kills from McClelland, Von Pingel and Alexander started a rally that brought Troy to within five of Middle Tennesee. Troy was never able to come closer than that throughout the set. Middle Tennessee eventually took the set and the match from the Trojans.

The Trojans will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they face the Lady Toppers of WKU at 3 pm in Sartain Hall. Tomorrow the first 150 fans in the game will recieve a free t-shirt.
