Trojans fall in to 3-2 in conference play, face Denver Sunday
Box Score
TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team fell to the University of North Texas 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference action Friday afternoon at the Trojan Soccer Complex. The loss is the second in conference play for the Trojans.
“We had good effort at many times in the game," said head coach Chris Bentley. "However, North Texas did well on the attack after we were unable to convert on our end."
The Trojans came out strong by possessing the ball and even attacking North Texas early, getting an opportunity less than 60 seconds into the match on a cross through the box. However, it would be North Texas who would strike first in the 15th minute on a corner kick to take the 1-0 lead.
“We lost marks on our corner kicks and North Texas did an excellent job executing them,” said Bentley. "You can't lose your marks and expect good things to happen"
North Texas was not done attacking the Trojans as they would score once more in the 27th minute to send Troy into halftime with a 2-0 deficit.
North Texas struck again in the 71st minute to take a 3-0 lead, however, the Trojans did not quit. After several attempts inside the 18, the ball bounced out to Ruth Sutcliffe, who was finally able to finish one as she drilled an unassisted shot into the back of the North Texas goal, cutting the lead to 3-1.
“We have to put this result behind us and make a better effort on Sunday,” Bentley said. "We will be playing another very good team in Denver, and we must get ready. It will be a day when we honor our seniors, so emotions will be high."
Troy plays Denver on Sunday at 12 noon inside the Troy Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home soccer matches, and the matches will be available on All-Access via TroyTrojans.com.
