Rebecca Marino came to Troy looking for her third straight USTA title in as many tries. She came. She played. She conquered. The 19-year old Canadian did it in dominant form too in the finals of the USTA Tennis Classic of Troy.
Marino took down a resilient Ashley Weinhold 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy, and the win made it her 15th match victory in a row.
“That was my best match of the entire tournament,” Marino said. “I'm pretty tired from the tournament, but I'm excited about the win. I'm really happy about how I have been getting consistent results in my game lately too, and winning the tournament was a lot of fun.”
For Marino, her goal of getting into the top-100 rankings is closer with the title. She currently stands at 117th, and she is looking to make ground in her last two tournaments to further that ranking.
“I'm trying to get to the Australian Open main draw,” Marino said. “I'm headed back to Montreal until the first week of November when I'll play my next tournament. I'm going to train for two weeks, and then I'll be getting back on the courts. I'm just going to try and take it one match at a time, and I hope my consistency continues.”
While in town, Marino enjoyed southern weather of Alabama as she won every set she played on the week with the exception of one.
“This is a great tournament,” Marino said. “It's very relaxed here, and they do a great job of running this tournament. I like it here in Troy.”
The USTA Tennis Classic of Troy concluded with the title match, and if the 2010 field of athletes follows trend, the names that highlighted this tournament will soon be highlighting major tournaments around the world.
