Championship Weekend at The USTA Tennis Classic of Troy
The USTA Tennis Classic of Troy has delivered surprises on the court all week, and it is only fitting that the championship match in the double bracket feature just one seed. The one seeded team is the fourth seed at that, and an unseeded pair will look to pull the upset.
Fourth-seeded duo Alina Jidkova and Laura Siegemund knocked off second-seeded Julie Ditty and Abigail Spears in dramatic fashion 6-3, 1-6 [10-5]. Siegemund and Jidkova both have been anxious to increase ranking points this week at The Classic, and their presence in the doubles finals will certainly help that goal.
The doubles championship match is pegged as the final battle on the courts on Saturday.
The final four on the singles side will do battle prior to that as they work towards a Sunday appearance in that championship match.
Alexis King came to Troy to make a statement this week, and the world's 714th ranked player coming into the week has earned a spot in the final four. King knocked off Ahsha Rolle in two sets on Friday 6-3, 6-4.
King will face Ashley Weinhold who defeated eighth-seeded Siegemund from the singles bracket. Weinhold won in two sets as well 6-1, 7-5, and the win guarantees an unseeded contender a spot in the finals.
The other side of the bracket will feature Irina Falconi facing the only seeded player left in the singles tournament bracket.
Second-seeded Rebecca Marino knocked off sixth-seeded Lindsay Lee-Waters 6-2, 6-4. The win for Marino setting her against Falconi makes for an interesting battle for the championship spot.
Falconi knocked off Sharon Fichman 6-3, 6-1 on Friday, and she has been projected as one particular contender that could make noise at The Classic.
The action begins at 10:00 am on Saturday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy. Admission is free to the public.
