SUNDAY RESULTS AGATE MONDAY ORDER OF PLAY
Qualifying rounds of the USTA Tennis Classic of Troy got under way on Sunday, and it turned out to be a predictable day on the courts at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy.
All eight of the seeded players in the qualifying rounds advanced over their opponents to live on to Monday. The local spotlight on the trio of Troy Trojans was not as successful though.
The local Trojans competing in the tournament were Karolyn Grymel, Leonie Guijt, and Olfa Dhaoui.
Grymel had the most success on the court today facing 697th ranked Chloe Jones. Grymel fell overall in the match 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, but she was the only one from the Trojans to win a set in the Sunday matches. Jones, the 20-year-old Kansas native will advance to face the top seed Jelena Pandzic on Monday.
Guijt fell in her qualifying match to fourth-seeded Lena Litvak in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Litvak was on the women's tennis team at Harvard before turning professional, and she qualified for two $75,000 events in 2009 including the annual tournament in Dothan, Alabama. 389th-ranked Litvak will face Alexis King on Monday.
Dhaoui fell to 786th-ranked Chelsey Gullickson 6-1, 6-0. Gullickson was an All-American for the University of Georgia where she captured the singles national title this year. In 2009 she was named the ITA Rookie Player of The Year as she posted 69 wins. The Georgia Bulldog will advance to face fifth-seeded Alexandra Mueller on Monday, and the match is anticipated to be one of the best on the second day of qualifying.
Mueller comes into the match against the NCAA champion as another well-accomplished athlete at a young age. Mueller won her first singles professional title at the age of 15, and her success has continued in the following years. This past May, the 22-year-old swept a Pennsylvania event where she took the singles and doubles title in front of her hometown crowd in Landisville. The victories in Pennsylvania started a success streak for Mueller that saw her win two more titles and reach the quarterfinals in four more events.
The Gullickson-Mueller is set to take place on the Stadium Court at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. The match is the second scheduled match on that court behind the opening match at 10 am.
