BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite shooting a higher percentage from both 3-point range and the field, Troy turned the ball over 18 times and lost to Florida Atlantic 83-69 on Thursday night in Sun Belt action.
The Owls (6-9, 2-2) turned the 24 Troy miscues into 24 points. For the game, Troy shot 50 percent from the field (25-of-50) and 54.5 percent from deep (6-of-11).
“They played a very good basketball game,” head coach Don Maestri said. “They really had a great game plan. Here we are playing Denver last week who is a team that is going to work the clock down. This team, who had been a team that liked to run and shoot it, comes out and plays four guards. They took the clock down every possession and when it got to 10 they would shout it out. We started getting frustrated and taking quick shots. They had a great game plan and it worked. You have to give them all the credit.”
FAU hit its first three treys to open up an 11-5 lead over the first three minutes. The hot shooting didn't stop their as the team continued to blister the nets, draining its first five 3-pointers resulting in a 21-11 advantage.
A 3-pointer by Shavar Richardson keyed a 17-2 run over four-plus minutes mid-way through the second half as they built a 19-point lead, 48-29 at the break. Greg Gantt led the Owls with 16 points at the break on four triples. He scored 24 for the game.
Aiding the strong play of Florida Atlantic in the first half were nine Troy turnovers that they Owls converted into 14 points.
Yamene Coleman was the lone bright spot for the Trojans. He scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the opening stanza. He finished with 10 points and a season-high 13 boards for his third double-double of the season.
The first half also featured the Sun Belt debut of sophomore transfer Steven Cunningham. Cunningham also scored his first career points on a put back. The Troy bench scored 21 points led by eight from Levan Patsatsia and seven from Vernon Taylor.
“[The reserves] played really well for the time they were in there,” Maestri said. “They kept it even and even cut into the lead a little bit.”
The Trojans (8-7, 3-1) cut the FAU lead to 17 points with a coast-to-coast lay-in by Mike Vogler and then a 3-pointer by Delk. The Owls killed that Troy threat with a put-back by Brett Royster and a 3-pointer from Raymond Taylor.
Troy cut the lead down to 14 after a steal and dunk by Taylor with 3:13 to go, but that we be as close as the Trojans would get. Both teams traded 5-0 runs to end the game.
Delk led Troy with 12 points and Hazzard added 11. Hazzard is now just 22 points from 1,000 for his career.
Hughley (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Taylor (11 points, 12 assists) each netted double-doubles for FAU.
The Trojans are in action next on Saturday evening when they face FIU at 6 pm central time in Miami.
