LAFAYETTE, La. – Troy's struggles in game following victories continued as they fell 69-54 to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in Sun Belt action.
Troy dropped to 3-7 on the season in games following wins and 1-3 following league victories. The team also scored a season-low 54 points, beating the previous low total of 58 scored at Florida.
The Ragin' Cajuns (8-11, 5-3) used timely shooting and tough defense to contain the Trojans, particularly Sun Belt leading scorer Brandon Hazzard. Matched up against UL senior Randell Daigle for most of the evening, Hazzard was held to just two points on 1-of-8 shooting, including 0-of-2 from 3-point range.
“I don't know if it was their [defense] as much it was that we just played a bad game,” head coach Don Maestri said. “We missed wide open shots. Delk missed a few shots; VT missed a couple of wide open shots. We fumbled the basketball. We didn't take care of the ball. We just didn't play a good game.”
As a team Troy (10-10, 5-4) shot just 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the field and turned the ball over 15 times. The Cajuns turned the 15 Troy miscues into 16 points.
“It's not the end of the season,” Maestri said. “We have to start all over again and forget it. We just played a bad basketball game.”
UL used a 10-2 run from 15:06 to 12:23 to take a 17-10 lead. The run included back-to-back treys from junior wing Chris Gradnigo. The Trojans used a 10-3 run to get the deficit down to two at 22-20, but the Cajuns answered with consecutive baskets to stretch the lead back to six with 4:51 left.
Louisiana-Lafayette closed out the first half with a 9-2 run that widened its lead all the out to 37-25 at the break. Gradnigo lead all first half scorers with 11 points on 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Michael Vogler hit his first 3-pointer to open second half scoring, but the Cajuns countered with six straight points before the Trojans could get a bucket to make it 43-30 with 17:14 left.
Vogler did provide one bright spot on the evening. He finished the game with four assists, entering the Sun Belt's top 25 career list with 404. He now stands just four behind Greg Davis' 408 for first on Troy's Division I list.
UL kept its strong play going and a dunk by Gradnigo left Troy trailing by 10. Gradnigo finished the game with 17 points. His trey with 2:32 to go proved to be a dagger and it gave UL a 15-point lead, 61-46.
Richard Delk led the Trojans with 19 points. No other Troy player reached double-figures. Tyren Johnson scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half to pace UL.
The Trojans are in action next on Thursday at home in Trojan Arena against ULM. Tip-off is set for 7:05 pm.
