Trojans Fall at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. - The Trojans traveled to Auburn on Wednesday night for there first mid-week game of the 2009 season. Unfortunately, the Trojans fell to the Tigers, 3-0 to drop their season record to 2-2.
The Trojans were led on the night by senior Meghan Gilroy with 12 kills. Megan Henderson had 25 assists on the match. Defensively, Lizzie Clough led the Trojans with 13 digs.
"We gave away too many points," head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said, "we gave them 15 of the 25 in the second set. I was disappointed in our effort at points in the match."
The Tigers (4-0) jumped out to an early lead in the first set, taking the five of the first six points. The Tigers maintained at least a three point cushion and expanded their lead to as much as eight at 19-11. The Trojans could never make a run of more than three points and fell 25-17.
The Trojans were led in set one by Gilroy with four kills on six attempts. Henderson posted 10 assists. The Trojans hit for a .167 percentage in the first set and Auburn hit for .267. Defensively the Trojans were led by freshmen Kayla Giles with five digs.
The Trojans got out to a better start in the second set, taking the first two points. However, the Tigers took the next four to pull ahead by two. The Trojans fought back to take four straight and pull ahead, 6-4. The Tigers took eight out of the next 12 to go ahead 12-8 before the Trojans called timeout. After the timeout, the Trojans took five of seven to pull within one at 14-13 and force Auburn to call a timeout.
After the Tigers' timeout, the two teams swapped points until the score was 18-17. The Tigers then took three straight to go ahead 21-17 before the Trojans took a timeout. After the break, the two sides traded points up to 24-20, then the Trojans fought off two match points before the Tigers took the second set, 25-22.
In the second set, the Trojans were led by Gilroy who had six kills with just one error and Henderson with 12 assists. The Trojans were led defensively by Clough who had six digs.
The third set started much like the first, with Auburn taking the first three points. The Trojans fought back and won four of the next five to tie the score up, 4-4. The two sides traded points up to 6-6 before the Tigers took three in a row to go ahead 9-6.
With the Tigers still ahead by three, the Trojans pulled within one at 11-10. The Tigers pulled ahead by as much as five at 18-13. The Trojans then scored twice to pull within three at 18-15. The Trojans called a timeout after the Tigers took the next two points and pulled ahead 20-15. After the break, the Tigers took five of seven to win the third set, 25-17.
