NEW ORLEANS - Troy's Meghan Gilroy and Louisiana's Lindsay Brown have been named the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Player and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, as voted on by the league's 13 head coaches.
Gilroy was named to the All-Tournament team at the Holiday Inn Invitational for her efforts in the Trojans three matches last weekend. Gilroy recorded 57 kills on the weekend -- for a 5.18 per set average. She played aggressive all weekend and only faltered seven times on her 93 total attack attempts. Gilroy posted a .538 hitting percentage in the three matches, with her highest kill (23) total coming in the team's only loss to Georgia Southern. During the weekend Gilroy moved up two spots on the Trojans' career kills list. She now stands fifth with a career total of 1,094. She also moved up one spot, to eighth, on the career attack attempts leader board.
Brown, who led the Sun Belt in digs per set in league play last season, picked up right where she left off to start the 2009 campaign. In the Ragin' Cajuns opening weekend at Sam Houston State, Brown collected 70 digs over 14 sets for an average of 5.00 digs per set. She reached double figures in digs each match, with her total increasing each time out. Brown tied her career-high with 25 digs in the championship match against Sam Houston State. Her performance was without blemish as she did not commit a single reception error the entire weekend. Dating back to last season, Brown is now on a string of 10 consecutive matches with double-digit digs and has reached double figures in 17 of her last 18 appearances on the court.
