TROY – Under the lights at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium, the Troy Trojans football program began their fall preparations for the 2009 season on Sunday evening.
Wearing helmets and shorts the Trojans practiced for two and a half hours and in the eyes of head coach Larry Blakeney, it was a successful one.
“It was good,” Blakeney said. “No one was hurt. We got a lot of reps done tonight, but we need more reps to really find out what we've got with some of these guys. We need some of them to get in and learn about the system on both sides of the ball. That is especially important for the new guys.”
The Trojans were able to get some early action for a large percentage of the roster, something Blakeney was particularly pleased with.
“It was good that we got a lot of reps for a lot of people. Were able to get a lot of the two's and three's in. So that was good,” he said.
“This is a good time to press some guys to see what they need to learn to get better.”
The Trojans will practice next on Monday night at 6 pm.
CALVIN TUTORS YOUNGSTERS: Several times during Sunday night's first practice senior defensive back Jorrick Calvin could be seen after drills providing one-on-one instruction with some of his younger position colleagues.
"I have to show a lot of leadership,” Calvin said. “If we can get these guys to learn this stuff early, then it helps us out a lot more. If they can learn everything, it gets them on the field faster and helps the whole team."
Calvin was pleased overall with the defense's performance on Sunday, going so far as to pour some praise on the entire unit.
"The team [was my personal highlight of tonight],” he said. “The defense got a couple of picks today. If we can get two or three picks in practice each day then we can turn that into two or three picks in a game too."
