Practice Makes Perfect
The old saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” is a wise quote explaining when in a foreign land it is often best to live as the locals would. Troy punter Will Goggans traveled to Costa Rica over the summer break from school, and he lived as the Central Americans do for ten days.
“It was a great experience,” Goggans said. “The entire country is absolutely beautiful, and I had a great time while I was there.”
Another great thing about Goggans' trip is that it added an “A” to his college transcript. Goggans and a number of other Troy University students made the trip as part of a class. The students went to Costa Rica, and for the duration of their trip they were to only speak the native language of Spanish.
“That was the difficult part,” Goggans said. “Sometimes you would be around your friends, and it was often tough to not speak English to them. We all stayed with host families, and no two students were placed in the same home. I had to make sure my Spanish was good because the family I stayed with spoke very little English. We managed to communicate through some Spanish mixed with hand signals, but I progressed as the week went by.”
Goggans learned a lot from his host parents Norma and Carlos, and he will never forget them from the memorable experience.
“I would say that learning anything, especially another language is a lot like football,” Goggans said. “It takes a lot of time and preparation, and practice is the key. If you don't practice then you won't do well.”
The class taught Goggans a lot about himself, another culture and a lot about practice. Now that he's back on the football field his routine is very similar. The only difference is that he is practicing for something completely different.
Goggans is back in Troy and doing as the Trojans do, and he is excited about the upcoming football season.
