TROY, Ala. ? In Friday night's series opener, the Troy Trojans pounded out 17 hits against Middle Tennessee pitching, but the Blue Raiders turned to junior Kenneth Roberts to put a stop to that on Saturday, and he delivered.
Roberts (6-1) held the Trojans without a hit for the first 6 1/3 innings and allowed just two in the game in leading MTSU to a 8-1 victory over Troy on Saturday to even the weekend series at one game each. He needed just 92 pitches to record his first career complete game.
The Trojans falls to 26-19 overall on the year and 13-8 in Sun Belt play while Middle Tennessee improved to 33-13 overall and 19-7 in the league. The teams will meet in the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
Roberts, a native of Murfreesboro, kept the Trojans off balance all night, recording 19 ground ball outs, three strikeouts and allowed only three balls to leave the infield. The only trouble the left-hander ran into was in the seventh inning when Ryan Ditthardt and Trevor Tyre both had doubles to score the only Troy run of the night. Those were the only Troy hits in the game.
Offensively, the Blue Raiders pounded out 17 hits against four Troy pitchers. Junior Jason Walls (3-4) lasted just three innings in his start, allowing four runs on six hits. Jeff Green pitched well behind Walls, allowing two runs in 4.2 innings of work.
“They put 17 hits on the board, they made some excellent plays on defense and Roberts had his best stuff working tonight,” Troy coach Bobby Pierce said. “We didn't get what we needed out of Walls, but Green came in and pitched well. MTSU did what they needed to do to keep us off the board.”
MTSU scored two runs in the second and two more in the third. Zach Dean doubled in the two second inning runs and walked with the bases loaded in the third to plate another. The Blue Raiders added single runs in the seventh and eighth and two in the ninth to seal the victory.
Tyler Burnett, Nathan Hines and Rawley Bishop had three hits each to lead MTSU, which had 14 singles among its 17 hits. Bryce Brentz, Blake McDade and Dean had two hits each.
The Trojans will send senior left-hander Travis Burge (4-1, 4.88) to the hill on Sunday to face MTSU junior right-hander Chad Edwards (7-1, 5.64).
