JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The Troy University women's golf team struggled with its putting in the final round of the JU women's Classic at Hiddle Hills Country Club and slipped into a tie for seventh in the nine-team field.
Four of the five Troy players carded scores of 85 in Tuesday's second, and final, round at the event. Only a missed birdie putt by sophomore Liz Balkcom on the final hole prevented all five players from posting the same score.
“It was the same story as the first round,” Troy coach Matt Terry said. “We hit a ton of fairways off the tee, but we could not convert that into hitting greens and we continued to struggle with the putter.
“Early on in the round I thought some of the girls pushed the panic button a little bit because most of our major mistakes came in the first five or six holes.”
The Trojans posted a team score of 340, which dropped the team into a tie with Daytona State college for seventh overall with a total score of 669.
Campbell, which led after a first round score of 310, improved by one shot as a team on Tuesday and won the tournament by 18 shots with a score of 619. Stetson finished second with a 637, followed by Florida Atlantic (647), Florida Gulf Coast (653), Jacksonville (655) and Bethune-Cookman (663). North Dakota finished last with a team score of 720.
Freshman Haley Lawrence was the highest individual finisher for Troy with a score of 166 to tie for 19th. Balkcom finished in a tie for 21st with a score of 167, followed by junior Kaley Branton in a tied for 23rd (168), with freshman Nikki Crowley and junior Desirae Zine in a tie for 27th with matching scores of 169.
The Troy women's golf team will return to action next weekend at the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational in Mobile.
