JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The Troy University women's golf team stands in a tie for third place after the opening round of the JU Women's Classic at Hidden Hills Country Club.
The Trojans are in the hunt for the tournament title despite hitting only 42 percent of greens in regulation and averaging 34-35 putts per player.
“We didn't play as well as we wanted to, actually, we probably played about as bad as we could play,” Trojans coach matt Terry said. “We hit the ball well off the tee, hitting 72 percent of fairways, but we didn't get on the greens and we didn't putt.
“Winds on the course were blowing 15-20 miles per hour all day and it was cold, but that is no excuse. We should play a lot better tomorrow.”
Sophomore Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) and freshman Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) finished the day tied for 11th overall in the nine-team, 49-player event. Both Trojans shot an opening round score of 81, with identical scores of 39 on the front nine and 42 on the back.
Junior Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) is tied for 19th place overall after an opening round score of 83. Freshman Nikki Crowley (Phenix City, Ala.) is tied for 22nd with junior teammate Dez Zine (Vaccaville, Cal.) after both players shot opening round scores of 84.
Crowley did get a thrill during Sunday's practice round when she scored her first career ace. She delivered the hole-in-one on the par 3 fifth hole, dropping the ball in from 155 yards with a five iron.
In the team standings, Campbell leads the tournament with an opening round total of 310. The Camels are led by tournament co-leader Sarah Bejgrowicz, who shot an opening round score of two-over 74.
Stetson stands second, 17 shots back, with Troy and Florida Gulf Coast tied for third, two shots behind the Hatters. Florida Atlantic and host Jacksonville are tied for fifth with scored of 332 with Dayton State College (333), Bethune-Cookman (336) and North Dakota (366) rounding out the field.
The Trojans will return to the 6,046 yard course on Tuesday for the final round, with play starting at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
