Troy Hosts Marshall on Monday
12/28/2009 4:00:00 AM | Basketball (M)
TROY – The Troy men's basketball team has to quickly erase the visions of sugar plums and dust off the cob webs as it prepares to host Marshall on Monday night in Trojan Arena.
The Trojans are coming off an 11-day break for the Christmas holiday – the longest in Troy's Division I tenure. The team will have to bring its “A” game on Monday in hopes of avenging an earlier loss to the Thundering Herd.
On December 12, Troy traveled to Huntington, W. Va. and fell to the Herd 99-70 behind double-figure points from four different Marshall players. The Herd hit 13-of-26 3-pointers and opened up a 56-31 halftime lead that the Trojans could never overcome.
Since the loss the Trojans have gone 1-1 dropping a game at Houston before defeating Sun Belt foe New Orleans in Troy's league opener.
Troy is led offensively by Brandon Hazzard, who is scoring 18.2 points per game. He is shooting 41 percent from deep. Richard Delk is adding 13.5 ppg and nearly five rebounds.
Mike Vogler is chipping in 12.3 points per game and has a team-best 59 assists. Alabama transfer Yamene Coleman is scoring 10.2 ppg and leads the team with 83 rebounds.
Marshall is led offensively by Tyler Wilkinson at 13.4 ppg. Freshman big man Hassan Whiteside is scoring 11.7 ppg with 8.7 rpg and is second in the nation with 56 blocked shots.
The two teams had met just one other time prior to this season, a 2001 contest won by the Trojans in Huntington. The overall series stands at 1-1.
Tip-off is set for 7:05 pm in Trojan Arena. Barry McKnight and Jerry Miller will bring you all the action from courtside beginning at 6:30 pm on the Troy ISP Network.
