TROY - For the sixth straight year Troy's student-trainers and student-athletes have teamed up to give back to their community.
With the leadership of the student-trainers and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Troy athletics department comes together every November to help the less fortunate in Pike County.
Boxes are placed in all locker rooms and in the training room and all athletes and trainers are encouraged to do their part. A week before Thanksgiving, the boxes are collected and brought to the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
The goods are then distributed to the families in the Troy and Pike County community that need the help the most.
Dr. John Anderson of the Troy Athletic Training Program has directed the program for all six years now.
"These kids are winners and they've come through once again," Anderson said of the student's efforts.
For the past two years, nearly 4,000 pounds of canned goods have been collected and given to families in need.
"This is a great cause because it benefits our community directly," Director of Student-Athlete Services and SAAC supervisor Matt Mayotte said. "It's also a good way for our student-athletes to show how much they care about their community."
Although the official amount donated will not be known until a later date, the athletes and trainers were able to collect enough goods to fill two truck beds.
