TROY - The Trojans couldn't complete a comeback from a 0-2 deficit in front of 613 fans at Trojan Arena on "Think Pink" night. Troy fell to Denver 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 26-24).
Troy fell in an early hole after dropping the first two sets. They had to come from behind to take the third set, but they fell victim to a Denver comeback in the fourth set.
"We knew we needed to come out and play well early," head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "Unfortunately we couldn't finish and hats off to Denver for playing very well."
The Trojans were led on the night by Meghan Gilroy who posted 19 kills and a .356 attack percentage. Megan Henderson had a match-best 37 assists. Defensively, Lizzie Clough posted 12 digs to lead the Trojans. Brittany McClelland, Laura Mackley and Emily Strader each posted nine digs. Devin Von Pingel led the team with five total blocks.
In the first set, Denver took the early lead off of a Trojan service error, and they never trailed. The score stayed within two points all the way to 15-13. At that time, the Pioneers scored four straight to go ahead 19-13. They maintained a six point lead throughout the rest of the set, and took the first set, 25-19.
In the second set, Denver used another late run to take control. With the scored tied at 15-15, the Pioneers took five straight points to pull ahead, 20-15. They maintained the lead and took the second set, 25-21.
The third set started much the same as the first two, but the Trojans used a couple of runs to get themselves back into things. After falling behind 11-6, Troy scored seven of nine points to pull within one at 13-12. The Trojans used their second bug run to take control when they were down 15-13. At that time Troy took 12 of the remaining 15 to climb back into things with a third set final score of 25-18.
The Trojans jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth set. They extended their lead to seven at 15-8. The Pioneers battled back to get within five at 23-18. It was at that point that they used an 8-1 run to take the fourth set, 26-24, and the match 3-1.
Denver was led on the night by Emmy Davidsmeyer who posted 17 kills. Defensively, Jordan Raines led the Pioneers with 15 digs.
"Thank you to everyone that supported Dig for the Cure tonight," Kirkpatrick said. "It was great to see everyone out here in their pink tonight, I just wish that we could've helped them leave happier."
The Trojans will back in action tomorrow when they cap off a busy day in Troy Athletics. Troy will take on North Texas at Trojan Arena at 7 p.m. For more stats and scores from the volleyball court, as well as all Trojan sports, check back with TroyTrojans.com.
