TROY, Ala. - The Troy University soccer team gave up an early second half goal and was unable to find the equalizer, falling to Florida Atlantic 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference action Friday afternoon.
The two teams battled the elements as the temperature dropped into the 50s with a brisk wind from the north howling the entire second half of action. The Trojans and FAU (4-10-2, 2-5 SunBelt) battled it out for the entire first half of action as the two teams combined for 14 total shots.
Troy (6-8-1, 2-5 SunBelt) totaled six of the shots, as freshman Nikki Stamaris accounted for two in the first half of action.
The scoreless first period marked the seventh time that has happened to the Trojans this season.
After just two minutes, the Owls' Alanna Jordan stunned the crowd as a cross turned into goal to give Florida Atlantic the 1-0 lead over Troy. Jordan's shot came from the right side of the field as she hammered the ball to the upper left side of the net past keeper Ashley Branham for the lead.
Troy's closest equalizer came in the middle of the half as they fired off three shots in 10 minutes. Two corner kicks off Bridget Duke caused chaos in front of the goal, but the Trojans could not capitalize on their multiple opportunities.
The Owls only had one shot on goal in the second half, as Troy outshot them 16-1 in the final 45 minutes of action. Owls' goalkeeper, Ashley Lantes came up 11 saves on Troy's 22 total shots.
Transfer April Madden topped the shot chart with four, while senior's Bridget Duke and Megan Bonfield and junior Mary Morris had three shots each. Goalkeeper Ashley Branham had four shots on the day, all coming in the first half.
Troy coach Chris Bentley was not upset with his team's performance as they played an impressive second half.
"We did a good job in the second half," he said. "We really took it to them and unfortunatley we just could not come up with the goal. I think we had a good half of soccer and hopefully we can bounce back on Sunday."
The Trojans look to snap their four-game losing streak on Sunday as they play host to FIU. Kickoff for the match is set for 1 pm at the Troy Soccer Complex.
