SAAC Holds January Meeting
1/21/2009 6:00:00 AM | General
The Troy University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has held its January meeting.
The meeting opened with Lonnie Cochran of FCA speaking to the group. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a non-profit organization that reaches out to young athletes across the world. The committee next discussed this year's Read Across America project. For the sixth consecutive year Troy student-athletes will volunteer their time at Charles Henderson Middle School and read to the students there. The purpose of Read Across America is to encourage and motivate students to enjoy reading. Not only will the athletes read to the students, they will also answer questions about how reading has helped them accomplish their goals. This year's Read Across America will take place throughout the day on March 2nd. Next the group discussed the progress of Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and Trojans for Baby Bella. This month's educational discussion focused on stereotypes. The group talked about the stereotypes that are commonly placed on student-athletes. It's no secret that many people believe that student-athletes don't focus on their studies, but Troy's student-athletes are doing something about that stereotype. On February 5th at the Trojans men's basketball game against Arkansas State, 180 student-athletes will be honored for maintaining 3.0 GPA's through the fall semester. The next SAAC meeting will be held of February 3rd at 7pm in Room 342 of the stadium tower.
