SAAC Holds First Meeting
9/8/2008 5:00:00 AM | General
The Troy University Student Athlete Advisory Committee held its first meeting of the academic year on Sunday night. The meeting was led by Student-Athlete Services Director, Mr. Matt Mayotte, and SAAC President Ryan Schmeling.
The SAAC functions as the primary avenue of communication between student-athletes, the university, and the athletic administration. The primary topic of this initial meeting was deciding which community events and charity fundraisers the student athletes would like to participate in during the 2008-2009 academic year.
Fred Johnson of the Pike County Habitat for Humanity spoke to the committee about how much there time and efforts mean to his organization, as well as the possibility of a Habitat build later in the fall semester.
Next, the “Trojans for Baby Bella” fundraiser was discussed. Bella is the ten-month-old niece of Trojan softball player Ashley Adkins. Bella was diagnosed with leukemia on August 20th of this year. Throughout the year, the softball team, as well as many other student athletes will be giving out orange “Trojans for Baby Bella” bracelets in exchange for donations. The bracelets are scheduled to be delivered on September 19th. For more information visit http://caringbridge.org/visit/bellav or contact Kathryn Ely at kely@troy.edu.
Some other projects that were discussed included the Pike County Food Drive, Relay for Life, and a SAAC Tailgate at a Trojan football home game.
The meeting was finished with an open discussion among the members on sportsmanship.
The committee will next meet on Wednesday October 15, 2008 at 7pm in room 342 of the stadium tower. Anyone who has any concerns or ideas they would like to present to the committee is encouraged to attend any meetings. The SAAC meets once a month.
