I have only one thing to say today, and it comes with great sadness. I was reading the news wire, and I saw it come up on Yahoo!, CNN, MSNBC...every news site...and I couldn't believe it.
And...you know...I can't even talk right now...as a fan of Troy football...I can understand the reasoning...but...it just...just...just read the press release yourself...
Potter Ends Heisman Run
It was the game Trojan faithful, and the nation, had been looking forward to since August 1st. Wes Potter and Troy University announced Potter would make a run for the Heisman Trophy, the first time in history that an offensive lineman was considered for the award. On Thursday night, Potter was an offensive barrage unseen since the invention of the forward pass.
The statistics boosted Potters contention: 0 touchdowns. 0 rushing/passing yards. 0 completions. 0 field goals made. And he put up all those numbers again Thursday night against Middle Tennessee State University.
The Blue Raiders had no answer for Potter's power and agility, and were outmatched at every position by Potter.
“I give it all to my running backs,” he said, “they really blocked well for me. I couldn't have done it without them.”
And with that, Potter effectively ended his run for Heisman, stating off the record that he wanted to give guys like Chase Daniel, Beanie Wells, Tim Tebow and Pat White a fighting chance at the Heisman.
“It's pretty obvious I had that piece on lock, but ?cha boy got things in store, ya' heard? There ain't no sense in frontin'” he said in a dialect not normally spoken by the lineman. “It's been a good run, but we have our eyes set on a Sun Belt Championship, and I feel the Heisman race will be, and has been, a distraction.”
With that, the run ended.
I spoke with Wes when I read about all this. He is my roommate. He was saddened by ending his run, but he felt it was best for the race. He did point out though, that he is considering running for president in 2012.
