Gilroy Named MVP, Trojans Win Again

CONWAY, SC - Meghan Gilroy earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Courtyard by Marriott Chanticleer Invitational, leading the Trojans to their second consecutive tournament title after defeating Georgia State 3-0.
Gilroy, a junior from Pensacola, finished the last match of the tournament with 12 kills against the Panthers in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 victory. For the tournament, she tallied 42 kills in three matches, and she hit no lower than .368 in the three matches. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by senior Aubre Smith and sophomore Megan Henderson.
The first set of the match saw the two teams trade points and battle each other for the first 36 points of the set, before the Trojans scored three consecutive to take a 21-18 on a pair of kills from freshman Erin Kissling and another from Smith. The Trojans were able to push the lead to as many as five when an attack error by Rachel Boryc led to a set point for the Trojans. Troy was able to put the match away on a kill by Kerry Heinz.
With a 1-0 lead in the overall match, Troy (7-4) had to battle from behind in the second set. Trailing by as many as four, 16-12, Troy trimmed the lead to 16-14, and then traded points with Georgia State until they took a 20-19 lead. After gaining the lead, the Trojans extended it to 22-19 on a service ace by Vicky Rogoschewsky and a kill by Gilroy. Georgia State came back and tied the set at 22-all, before the Trojans scored the final three points of the set on kills from Gilroy and Smith. The set was won on a service ace by Gilroy, giving Troy a 2-0 overall lead in the match.
The third and final set saw the Trojans jump to an early lead at 10-6, before pushing the lead to as many as five late in the final set. The Trojans biggest lead of the set came on the final point on an attack error by Liz Schaab.
Kissling finished the night with 10 kills, while Henderson recorded another double with 24 assists and 11 digs.
Troy returns to action Tuesday night against Jacksonville State in their second home match of the season. The match is schedule to start at 5:30 and admission is free at Trojan Arena.
