Trojans Sweep UAPB For First Victory

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Troy Trojans swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 to record their first victory of the season at the MSU Classic Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans were able to bounce back from their morning match against Mississippi State to defeat UAPB 25-16, 25-17 and 25-19, behind the performance of senior Aubre Smith who was to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament.
Troy found themselves trailing 2-0 in the opening game, before reeling off 10 of the next 13 points to take a 10-5 lead. During the run, the Trojans took advantage of a pair of errors by the Lady Lions to take a 4-3 lead before a service ace by Vicky Rogoschewsky extended the lead to 5-3. After a point by the Lady Lions, Troy again took advantage of a pair of Lady Lions errors and a kill by Jennifer White to take a 9-4 lead.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff came back to tie the opening game at 13-13, before Troy went on a 12-3 run to end the game and take a 1-0 lead. During the run, the Trojans used another service ace by Rogoschewsky, three attack errors by Arkansas-Pine Bluff, three kills by Erin Kissling and a pair of kills by White to claim a 25-16 victory.
In the second game of the match, the Trojans went on a 12-4 run early on after the match was tied at 1-1, to take a 12-5 lead. The lead was extended to as many as seven points at 21-14, before UAPB was able to put two more points on the board to trim the lead to 21-16. Rogoschewsky extended the Trojans lead to 22-16 with a kill, before the Lady Lions used an attack error by the Trojans to trim the lead to 22-17. The final three points of the game were scored by the Trojans on a pair of Lady Lions errors and a kill by sophomore Megan Henderson ended the game at 25-17.
The third and final game was tied at 9-9 before Arkansas-Pine Bluff took a 10-9 lead midway through the match. The Trojans tied the game at 10-all on a kill by White off an assist by Emily Strader. From that point, Troy went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. After the Lady Lions and Troy traded points, the Trojans scored back-to-back points to take a 17-12 lead on a kill by Kissling and put the game out of reach. The Lady Lions trimmed the lead to 23-19 before Troy scored the final two points of the match on kills by Henderson and Kissling.
Kissling led the Trojans with 11 kills on 18 attempts for a .500 attack percentage. She was the only Trojan in double figures, with White addung nine and Smith eight in the victory. Henderson added 21 assists, while Meghan Washlow contributed 11 digs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-3) was led by Tiana McCowan with five kills.
Troy (1-2) returns to action Friday, September 5 against Indiana State University at the University of Memphis Tournament, the first of four matches for the Trojans in two days of the tournament.
