Saturday Night
August 2
We get a good little break tomorrow morning. Some will get up and go to church, others will take advantage of some needed sleep. Sleep is essential during camp. If you don't get a good enough amount, you better plan on feeling bad for the entire day, and having a bad practice.
We get into full pads tomorrow...been in "shells" since yesterday...two-a-days coming up on Monday. It's weird practicing with the sun coming up on two-a-days, as we are ON the field around 5:30 a.m. That was a first time experience for me last fall, as I had never done an early morning two-a-day back in the dirty 863. Usually, the sun is going down...as it is now...so that messes up your mental clock even further.
Practice has had its good points, but Coach (Neal) Brown has been stressing getting to the line, and playing with the speed that makes this offense click...practice will correct our mistakes.
A few funny things happened this weekend that I feel I can share:
Friday, we had to wait about 30 minutes before we could practice. We started to go out, but then they called us back in because of inclement weather. Most of the offense gathered in the big, stadium-style video meeting room.
This is always a recipe for some stupid game to conjure itself up. I'm happy to report that the bright idea of "Football Into A Trash Can" was the occupant of the down time...The most accurate was obvious, with Maurice Greer sinking two straight shots...narrowly missing the third with a rim bounce out.
It was Make it-Take it. Nic Riley earned the honor of only person to DRILL the trash can...three times...intentionally. Good accuracy from that standpoint. I did not get the chance to make any shots, as I became a self-imposed rebounder.
Chuck (Ash) showed his ability to get in the way of signals during team scrimmage period. He asked me after I came off the field if told him to, "Get the 'heck' out of the way..." I said, "No", but after some thought I realized it was him that was in the way. I just saw a body in the way, and knew we had to get the play in quickly, and yelled toward the sideline...as did others.
I then reminded Chuck that, "Come on Chuck, I have respect." At which point he did not reply, and only laughed. He did mention that it would be good blog material. Classic Chuck. Touche' Training Man, touche'.
And finally, also on Friday, I was sent in unexpectedly to fill in on first team field goal unit. In my utter excitement, I kicked into a sprint to the line...and in the process...Mikey (Taylor), our kicker, stepped directly in front of me...on accident. Unlucky for me, I didn't notice him until I had a picture-perfect trip and landed on the turf. (Austin) Silvoy wasted no time in pointing out to me that I should "Be a better athlete."
I spent some time on a new graphic since I have a little more time to sleep in the morning. Momentum is building, and attention is beginning to focus more on Wes Potter and his Cinderella run for the Heisman. With the numbers that Potter puts up, how can he not be the favorite?
Just sit back, and think about this for a minute...0 touchdowns. This hasn't been done by a Heisman candidate...ever...Potter is the first to accomplish the feat. And the last. You asked for it, and you got it.
