What Day Is It, Really?

Tale of the Tape
August 20
Today is Friday, technically speaking. And before you check your calendar, let me explain because it took me a while yesterday to figure it out too.
Since we play on Thursday next week ? which would make that a Saturday in game mode ? today would be Friday before a Saturday game. But...it is Wednesday, too.
Practice is a bit strange and not how I remember us
practicing in the 2003 season, which was the last time I was on the football
field. Offense is isolated in the stadium and the defense is isolated on the
lower fields. It's the “ones” versus the scout team. And, oh boy, the scout
teams are getting a
We have added 18 new guys to the team since Sunday and they are in the acclimation process, meaning they are in modified practice gear today and tomorrow and not in full pads like the other guys.
In addition to adding to the football roster, we are now
working at full steam with the other sports. We herded more than 200
student-athletes through the physical process Sunday. Just like cows at the

It was two hours of their lives well spent.
Returning student-athletes get a free pass through some of those stations, making it a little quicker for them. They are reviewed since their exit physical at the end of the last season and recheck BP and pulse. If there are any medical or orthopedic issues identified, they are re-visited by the respective physician and a plan is set into action.
So what do you get when you take 10 Certified Athletic Trainers, 30 Athletic Training Students, 10 physicians, 200 student-athletes, a Snellen Eye Chart, an EKG machine, and seven hours? Mass physicals...and a little chaos!
So now, we have around 450 active student-athletes under our care for the 2008-2009 seasons. We are treating about 50 of them a day for various injuries, maintenance, stretching, and sickness. At the moment, from my office window, I can see student-athletes from the volleyball, baseball, and football teams, as well as a cheerleader. They are all hard at work, trying to get better so they can get out of here!
I wish I could work hard and get out of here sometimes too!
A glimpse into my not so glamorous life...but what a life it is!
I need to say “Happy Birthday” to Anna Talbot, one of the football Athletic Training Students, who turned 22 yesterday! She's a senior from Valley and plays a mean fiddle, so we're told. We celebrated by learning how to set up the locker room for half time with one of our team physicians after practice! That, and some cake.
For those older Athletic Training Students that may be wondering...no, she did not end up in the cold whirlpool, as most of us did if anyone ever learned of our birthday in the Athletic Training Room. Those were the good old days!
Lastly, I was glad to see some of my old friends Saturday night at the Fan Appreciation “to-do.” It was a fun time had by all! Hope to see you all at the games!
And for those I didn't see Saturday night...hope to see you all there as well!
GO TROJANS
