Practice is Rolling
The Trojans were a little late getting on the field for practice today. We had a pretty heavy rainstorm about 5:30 p.m. that included a little bit of lightening. We take no chances with our student-athletes when there is a chance for lightening, so the start of practice was delayed about 20 minutes.
The team is in “shells” today, meaning shorts and shoulder pads. Coaches call it a “thud” practice, but there is still a good bit of hitting. Tomorrow will be another “thud” practice, before the real hitting starts on Sunday.
I am always amazed while watching practice at all of the little issues that come up. Shoes that don't fit quite right, causing discomfort, a shoulder wrap causing issues, helmets that need a little more, or less, air. It is a constant juggling act for the trainers and the managers to make sure all of the players are happy and focused on learning what they have to do.
Our folks do a great job, and they don't get enough credit.
Coach Blakeney was riding around in a golf cart at practice yesterday, and had it back on the field available tonight, but he parked it early on and was on foot most of the night. Standing on the turf at Movie Gallery Stadium for three hours is tough on the feet, knees and back. I don't blame him for getting a little relief when he can.
I don't know how many of you saw the report live, but WSFA has Jeff Shearer's report from our media training on their web site.
I spent much of today editing photos from our picture day on Tuesday. I should have them available in a photo gallery this weekend.
For Troy fans planning to attend the Trojans' game at Ohio State in September, I received an e-mail this afternoon from the Buckeyes' SID, Shelly Poe. She said there are a limited number of RV parking spots available for sale for our game there.
These spaces can be purchased online at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com, and the system will be operational for purchases next week. No one will be permitted to purchase University-lot parking for RVs on the day of the game because all spots are numbered and pre-assigned.
In case you haven't looked at the schedule, kickoff for the game at Ohio State is set for 11 a.m. (CT) and the game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
Finally, a random thought hit me today while I was check messages on my Facebook page. Troy baseball coach Bobby Pierce should really focus his recruiting efforts on players born on August third.
Why? This Sunday, three former Trojans will celebrate birthdays ? Tom King, Jared Keel and Beau Brooks. I'd say those were three pretty good players here at Troy.
Until tomorrow ...
