Items of Interest
I just wanted to throw out a few items I thought would be of interest this morning.
First, I want to again thank Tony Barnhart and Jeff Shearer for assisting with our media training Tuesday afternoon. Tony had a nice piece on Troy in his blog on the AJC web site this morning. You can read it here.
I noticed on The Sporting News e-mail edition Tuesday that they had ranked the top defensive players at each position across the NFL. Former Trojans Osi Umenyiora and DeMarcus Ware were both ranked. Umenyiora was ranked as the third best defensive end, behind Jared Allen of the Vikings and Dwight Freeney of the Colts. Ware was ranked as the top outside linebacker in the league.
Another note of interest from the NFL is that Leodis McKelvin is already impressing in Bills camp, both with his talent and work ethic. McKelvin told media outlets in Buffalo that they first thing he plans to do now that he has signed his contract is to but a home for his mother.
Several other former Trojans are in NFL camps right now, and I'll try to keep you posted on their progress. Here is a list of the players I know about.
● Brannon Condren with the Indianapolis Colts
● Alfred Malone with the Green Bay Packers
● Gary Banks with the San Diego Chargers
● Marcus Richardson with the Houston Texans
● Elbert Mack and Chris Bradwell with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
● Marcus Pittman with the New Orleans Saints
● Lawrence Tynes with the New York Giants
Here are a few dates of interest to put on your calendars:
● Saturday, August 16, is Football Appreciation Night in the Stadium Club at the Hawkins Tower. Tickets are available through the football office for $100 each. That covers drinks and dinner and also an entry into the draw down. Contact Judy Morgan in the football office at 334-670-3682 to reserve your spot. Space is limited.
● Sunday, August 17, is Fan Appreciation Day at Trojan Arena. Members of the football, volleyball and soccer teams, as well as the cheerleaders, will be on hand for pictures, to sign autographs and meet with fans. The event will get started at 1:30 p.m. and is free to everyone.
● The Troy football teams is currently scheduled to hold scrimmages at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium on August 9 and 16. The August 9th scrimmage is set for 10 a.m. The time has not yet been set for the 16th. Stay tuned for that.
There is another new item on the web site you can check out. Travis Jarome, our Assistant Director of Athletics Media Relations, has started a Trojan Tidbits area. He'll be posting links to items across the internet of interest to Troy fans. You can check it out here.
Well, that's it for now. Practice starts in a couple of hours and we'll be off and running. I appreciate the e-mails we have been getting. Keep them coming.
Until after practice ...
