It's Football Time Again!
Wow! What a day it has been. I can certainly tell that football season is here. I got to my desk at 7:30 this morning with every intention of writing a blog entry to get the day started. Now, 10 hours later, I finally have a moment to sit down and put some thoughts together.
Here's a little insight into the life of an SID at the start of football practice.
I got started by getting information copied and ready to give the players regarding picture day tomorrow. We'll be shooting head shots for both the game program and the video board, as well as group photos and the team picture.
Action Sports International will have photographers here to shoot portrait shots of the players they will package to sell to parents. Our own Kevin Glackmeyer will handle shooting head shots for us in his studio and the crew at Troy TV ? Kyle Bozeman, Aaron Taylor and Jeff Herring ? will handle the video shoot. Cass Davis, who works for Kevin, will be shooting group shots on the field for us in the morning.
Picture day is always somewhat stressful because it takes a lot of planning to make happen, and rarely goes as planned. With part of the shoot taking place at Wallace Hall, we'll have the added coordination of transportation to deal with. Thankfully, Troy University has several buses that are used to transport students during the semester, and they will be available for us tomorrow.
After a 9 a.m. staff meeting, I got back to the office and met briefly with my guys ? Travis Jarome, Jason Wright and Taylor Bryan. We talked about our effort to get more bloggers going and we have already added a couple in Micah Grimes and Jeffrey Morgan. Travis has done a great job getting the blogs set up on the web site and he has also been working on some gameday pages for the coming season I am sure you will enjoy.
I also carved out some time today to work on a pet project I have going. We are working to publish a 12-month All-Sports calendar that will include all available sport schedules for the coming year. It will be a full color piece that will run from August 2008 to July 2009. I hope to find time tomorrow to put the finishing touches on it and get it to the printer so that we can have it available to sell once school starts.
Another big project currently ongoing in the Media Relations office is mailing out the football guides. The books were delivered on Friday afternoon and today Jason and Brynna Waters spent a lot of time stuffing envelopes. We mail books to all of our opponents, as well as all of the other schools in the Bowl Championship Division. We also sent them to all of the NFL teams, all of the bowls and all-star games, and last, but certainly not least, all of our media.
For fans who want a copy, the Media Guides are available through our Athletics Ticket office for $15 each, plush $3 each for shipping. I hope to have them available in the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on campus later this week as well.
If all of that wasn't enough, the players reported to camp today. They had a meeting at 4 p.m. and I had one reporter, Drew Champlin from the Dothan Eagle, here to get some interviews. A couple of players ? Will Chambliss and Sherrod Martin ? also had phone interviews with Jamie Lay from Sports Unlimited magazine in Atlanta. They are planning a piece on the Trojans in their August issue.
There are a couple of other things I wanted to pass along this afternoon. For those of you who didn't hear, former Trojan Leodis McKelvin signed his contract with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and reported to camp. All of the reports I have read said they expect big things from Leo right away. I have the same expectations. He is a great player and an even better person.
I saw an interesting line on another former Trojan this morning. The Dallas Morning News had a piece on DeMarcus Ware, click here for the full story, and there was one line that caught my eye. It was the lead to the story, and it was straight to the point.
“DeMarcus Ware is scary, and it might end up costing the Cowboys big money.”
I can't help but wonder who on the 2008 Trojans' team will be the next Ware, or Umenyiora or McKelvin. There are several candidates. It'll be fun to see which ones step forward.
I'll have more tomorrow.
