MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jacksonville outfielder Adam Godwin, an Enterprise native, had his own
school group cheering him at Tuesday's Grand Slam School Day.
Enterprise's College Street Elementary, where Godwin was a substitute teacher after the 2005 season, had a group at the game. After Jacksonville's 6-4, 11-inning victory, Godwin visited principal Twyla Pipkin and the children. He even jumped into the stands to pose for pictures.
When all of the children couldn't fit into the picture because of the bleachers, Godwin led the group onto the field, though Godwin did so without permission.
"I'll take the blame," Godwin said. "I brought them out there."
Godwin wasn't part of the plans when College Street booked its tickets, though the school chose Tuesday's game because of the possibility Godwin would be with the Suns.
"They bought them and here I am," Godwin said. "It all worked out."
Godwin gave the kids something to cheer. He was 2-for-4 with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored, including the go-ahead run in the 11th inning. He also gave them something to groan over, dropping a flyball in center field in the third inning.
"One thing I take seriously and have a lot of pride in is my defense," Godwin said. "I took my eyes off the ball and made a silly error."
Godwin was an elementary education major at Troy University before he was drafted in 2005 and hopes to one day complete his degree. He's one year short of graduating.
"I want to finish, but at the same time, I want to make the big leagues," the 25-year-old said. "I'm concentrating on baseball right now."
Godwin is 7-for-16 with four RBIs, five runs scored and six steals in four games against the Biscuits.
