Troy Wins MTSU Spring Tournament

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Troy University volleyball team played in their first tournament of the spring season and came away with the championship trophy at the Middle Tennessee Spring Tournament.
The Trojans dropped their first match of the tournament to Jacksonville State University 21-25, 25-21, 15-13; before rallying to win their next four matches to claim the championship.
Troy came from behind and defeated Chattanooga in their second match of the tournament 19-25, 25-17, 15-9; before defeating Lipscomb 25-14, 23-25, 15-11 to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals, the Trojans played defending Sun Belt champion Middle Tennessee who went 35-3 last season. The Trojans dispatched of the Blue Raiders 25-21, 27-25 to reach the championship match where they defeated Tennessee Tech 19-25, 25-22, 15-12.
"It was a great tournament," Troy coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "All 10 players played a a key role in us winning the tournament. Every team that we played in the tournament had a higher RPI than we did last season, and to be able to beat the teams that we did this weekend shows the direction that the program is headed."
Troy returns to the court this week facing the University of Montevallo at 6:30 pm on Wednesday night in Trojan Arena.
