I will be the first to admit that I was a little worried about putting up the "New Orleans Bound" bulletin board in the Field House Athletic Training Room, partly because I have been witness to the phenomenon of wishing for something that never comes to fruition.
I share in the superstition that if you say something about it while it's actually underway it won't happen. This is supremely exhibited in one of my favorite movies "For Love of the Game" with Kevin Costner - who I think is one of the most attractive men on earth - where he's pitching a no-hitter...don't say it or it won't happen!
I would like to say 'nah-ni-nah-ni-boo-boo' to Josh Pruitt who criticized me for putting up the board in the first place! Maybe since I said we were New Orleans-bound by putting it on the board and then Josh commented on it being bad luck, it was, in fact, retroactively good luck!? Makes sense to me!
I haven't worked a single football practice since the middle of November. Not to say I haven't WORKED since the middle of November, because I definitely think I've put in my hours around here. I've been on football game-only status since then, which makes me feel like sort of a big deal (not really). It also makes game day for me a lot like a family reunion. I get to speak to coaches and players that I haven't seen in a while and we catch up on old times.
It also makes it a little sad: earlier in the season there were players that I taped exclusively. No questions asked - Alyson was taping them. They would wait in line as long as it took. Now, by necessity they've moved on to other tapers. It's like they've all grown up and moved out of the house. On one hand, I'm happy: it means the student athletic trainers have improved as tapers and are ready to go out on their own soon. On the other hand, I feel like I'm not needed all that much anymore.
Chuck makes sure to always say nice things when I mention I'm feeling close to useless around here. He's a great boss! I do feel sorry for him sometimes, though, since he works with three females: Diana Avery, Cherise Crisman, and me. We give him a run for his money, you can be sure.
Basketball starts Sunbelt Conference play against Middle Tennessee this Thursday. I will be loading up tomorrow to make the trip. From there, I'll be in a Trojan athletic event marathon with basketball on the 18th at home then on the road to UAB on the 19th-20th, straight to
Lastly, I need to take a moment to say a fond farewell to a special person, my sister, Alyene, who will graduate from
She has lived with us for the last two and a half years and has become a special part of our household. She has put up with our crazy schedules and moods, and helped out tremendously with my daughter during that time. I'm not sure if she's been part-mom or part-sister to Meredith.
We've shared picnics in the crow's nest of the practice field and on the 50-yard line in Movie Gallery Stadium, bus rides with the basketball team to
I'm sure when she made the move from
I know she's looking forward to her dream job with ?Big Four' Ernst & Young in
So, fair warning: If any of you see me in the next few weeks and I look like I've been crying, just remember that my little sister is all grown up and has moved out of the house. If I don't look like I've been crying, please do me a favor and don't mention her.
See you in
GO TROJANS!!
Alyson
