12/31/2008 6:00:00 AM | Basketball (M)
BOWLING GREEN ? Just 13 hours after the ball drops in New York City, the Troy Trojans will take the floor to face Western Kentucky University in the first Sun Belt basketball game of 2009.
Both teams enter the game coming off 13-point losses, Troy at the hands of Jacksonville University on Monday and WKU's coming from Florida State.
The Hilltoppers (7-4, 1-0) were picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference Eastern division after losing 60% percent of their scoring from last season ? including SBC Player of the Year and NBA draft pick Courtney Lee.
This season they have a trio of players scoring in double figures with A.J. Slaughter (15.9 ppg), Orlando Mendez-Valdez (12.1 ppg) and Sergio Kerusch (10.7 ppg) each scoring over the plateau.
Troy (5-8, 1-1) is led offensively by Richard Delk (14.0 ppg) and Brandon Hazzard (12.0 ppg). Additionally, Michael Vogler leads the Sun Belt in assists with 6.8 assists per game.
The Trojans own just one victory over WKU, a 27-point win in 2006, a game that was also the first-ever Sun Belt home game for the Trojans. Since that game Troy has dropped its last five to the Hilltoppers, including a 35-point loss at Diddle Arena last year.
Tip-off for Thursday's game is set for 1 PM. Live stats will be available at the link above. Barry McKnight will bring you all the action from courtside via the Troy ISP Network.
The game is also being broadcast via the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network. You can catch Troy vs. WKU on DirecTV channel 617 and Fox College Sports.
